From the Foucault pendulum to the galactical gyroscope and LHC

چکیده
The Lagrange theory of particle motion in the noninertial systems is applied to the Foucault pendulum, isosceles triangle pendulum and the general triangle pendulum swinging on the rotating Earth. As an analogue, planet orbiting in the rotating galaxy is considered as the the giant galactical gyroscope. The Lorentz equation and the Bargmann-MichelTelegdi equations are generalized for the rotation system. The knowledge of these equations is inevitable for the construction of LHC where each orbital proton “feels” the Coriolis force caused by the rotation of the Earth.

The Foucault Pendulum (with a Twist)
A Foucault pendulum is supposed to precess in a direction opposite to the earth’s rotation, but nonlinear terms in the equations of motion can also produce precession. The goal of this paper is to study the motion of a nonlinear, spherical pendulum on a rotating planet. It turns out that the problem on a fixed energy level reduces to the study of a monotone twist map of an annulus. For certain ...
متن کاملTowards Gyroscopic Balance Assistance: Proof of Concept*
In this paper, the feasibility of a Control Moment Gyroscope (CMG) as balance assistance device is investigated. An inverted pendulum is used as experimental set-up. Our initial results show that it is possible to maintain balance within a 4 degrees range from vertical.
متن کاملAnalysis of a solid state wave gyroscope with thin shell cylindrical resonator and calculation of its conversion factor
In this work the equations of motion of a Solid State Wave Gyroscope (SWG) with rotary thin cylindrical shell resonator is analyzed using the shell and plates elasticity theory. The gyroscope conversion factor found in this analytical study corresponds with the experimental results obtained and listed in the References. The function of the SWG to measure the angular velocity or the rotating ang...
متن کاملA load position observer for cranes with gyroscope measurements
In crane automation systems, precise knowledge of the load position is a key factor for fulfilling positioning accuracy requirements. This contribution presents a nonlinear observer design for harbor cranes which makes use of gyroscope measurements. Both single-pendulum load configurations and more complex double-pendulum configurations are considered. The gyroscope sensors are attached to the ...
متن کاملNon inertial dynamics and holonomy on the ellipsoid
Traditionally, the discussion about the geometrical interpretation of inertial forces is reserved for General Relativity handbooks. In these notes an analysis of the effect of such forces in a classical (newtonian) context is made, as well as a study of the relation between the precession of the Foucault pendulum and the holonomy on a surface, including some critical remarks about the common st...
